I did a guest spot on Ted Bell’s podcast last week during which he asked me about why I split my writing/podcasting into two different “verticals,” and I explained more or less that it made sense to separate the more serious stuff (biomedical authoritarianism, e.g.) from the more frivolous (drafting fantasy baseball teams.) But in talking about it, I realized it wasn’t so much a marketing issue, or as he put it, a distinction between “commerce” and “art,” but simply an organizational choice.
That’s because even the Real Man Sports posts and podcasts aren’t really created to generate anything resembling a “product” of any kind that’s in actual demand from the market. I didn’t even do a cheat sheet for baseball this year, and I never do waiver wire pickups or start/sit content. As I mentioned on the podcast, I’m more like one of you — someone who *plays* fantasy sports and likes to talk about it more than someone making tools for people playing fantasy sports like they do at RotoWire. I too am panning for gold like it’s 1849, not selling picks and shovels.
Most of you have probably figured this out by now, but figured I’d mention it lest anyone be disappointed in what they’ll find here. I basically just talk about my teams and random other sports topics in which I’m interested. It *might* have some actionable value. It often will not.
I’m also going to talk about more random shit that pops into my head like which active baseball players should be in the Hall of Fame, what my all-time basketball squad would be or where Ronald Acuna’s 2023 season ranks all-time fantasy-wise. One of the benefits of selling your company and doing your own thing is you can pretty much do whatever the laws of physics permit. So the only promise I’ll make is not traveling faster than the speed of light, though, to be fair, a real man would attempt it.
I have always appreciated you for your way of thinking and how you would be “out of the box”. I play all the fantasy sports national contests so I already do all my own prep and such I don’t need “lists” or start/sits… I do value perspective and I feel I use different parts of the brain when I listen to you, and that goes for non sports topics too. Thanks for the content! Keep it up
