It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. And likewise, it’s all fun and games when you’re drafting your fantasy baseball teams, but not so much now that I have to explain why none of them cashed.
The first BCL, the Jack Kitchen team, was the worst. My first two picks were Jose Ramirez (12 HR, 53 RBI, 71 runs, .235 BA, 37 SB) and Vlad Guerrero (9 HR, 57 RBI, 72 runs, .260 BA, 7 SB). That’s drawing dead.
The second BCL, the Ryan Garofalo team, had Paul Skenes (who pitched like a solid 12th rounder) and Corbin Carroll who was less terrible than Ramirez and Vlad, but good enough for sixth place, and that’s where it wound up. (He did drop my 29th round Jake McCarthy, otherwise we surely would have cashed.)
The Alex Puma Online Championship team also started Ramirez/Vlad. I got him Chris Sale in Round 4, but Brent Rooker in Round 5. Seventh place is about the most I could have expected from it.
Finally my Main Event Dusty Wagner team started Skenes and Brian Woo. I almost took Chris Sale instead of Woo, but I put too much credence in the projection dorks, and the projections loved Woo. Never again.
The other problem with that team was the first hitter was Trea Turner, the second Ketel Marte. And then I added Ryan HelsNOley in Rd 5, and we were toast. Had I taken Sale like my gut was telling me, and had someone taken Turner at ADP, things might have turned out differently:
But woulda/coulda/shoulda.
That’s about all there is to say about my lost MLB season. I’m annoyed at myself for leaning too heavily on the projections and annoyed at MLB for lining the first round with land mines, but it is what it is.
Will have to change my approach in 2027.
